Andromeda and the Sea Monster 2024

The inspiration for Andromeda and the Sea Monster 2024 comes from Domenico Guidi's sculpture Andromeda and the Sea Monster at The Met in New York. The original piece portrays Andromeda, daughter of the Ethiopian queen Cassiopeia, chained to a rock and awaiting rescue by the Greek hero Perseus, who slays the sea monster to claim her in marriage. Such narratives have become undeniably outdated in contemporary society. Even in moments of crisis, women no longer look to men for salvation but instead rely on their own strength. Artist Mengyao Xu reimagines the sculpture, placing the female figure in its mythological context while reconstructing the story, giving Andromeda in 2024 the power to liberate herself.
