As an an avid music enthusiast and writer, recently I had the privilege of sitting down with the incredibly talented pop artist Maria Raquel. Born into a lineage of legendary musicians, 17 year-old Maria Raquel's soul resonates with the timeless melodies of her ancestry. Her great-grandmother, the renowned violin virtuoso Sheila Carr, mentored and taught music to none other than Tito Jackson of the Jackson 5. Following in her family's footsteps, Maria Raquel's grandmother, Nita Riley, and her mother, Raquel Riley Thomas, emerged as maestros in their own right, igniting stages with their soulful performances.
Now, Maria Raquel stands as a resplendent, independent artist, ready to make her own mark on the world with her unique sound. Her latest album, "1 AM," unveils the depth of her musical prowess, blending pop grit vocals with ethereal melodies. Maria Raquel's commitment to creating music for all audiences is evident in her new singles, "Plot Twist," "Bull's-Eye," and "I'm Better," each exploring different facets of her artistry.
In a candid conversation with me, Maria Raquel opened up about her musical journey:
Cindy Tansky: Maria Raquel, your music is deeply rooted in your family's musical legacy. How has your ancestry influenced your sound and style as an artist?
Maria Raquel: My family's musical legacy is the foundation of my sound and style. Growing up, I was surrounded by incredible music, from classical to soul. It's in my blood, and it's what I draw upon when I create. My great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother were all powerful influences. They taught me that music is not just about notes and melodies; it's about emotion and storytelling. I carry that with me in everything I do.
Cindy Tansky: Your new album, "1 AM," has been met with critical acclaim. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this album and how it represents your artistic evolution?
Maria Raquel: "1 AM" is a very personal album for me. It's about those late nights when you're alone with your thoughts, and everything feels so intense. Each song is a snapshot of a moment in time, a feeling that I wanted to capture and share with the world. This album represents a new chapter in my life, both musically and personally. I feel like I've grown so much as an artist, and I wanted this album to reflect that growth.
Cindy Tansky: Your single "Plot Twist" has been particularly well-received. What inspired this song, and what message do you hope listeners take away from it?
Maria Raquel: "Plot Twist" is a song about empowerment and self-discovery. It's about finding the strength to break free from something that's holding you back and embracing who you truly are. I wrote this song during a time of significant change in my life, and it was incredibly cathartic for me. I hope that listeners can relate to it and find their own strength and courage through the music.
Cindy Tansky: Your new singles, "Bull's-Eye" and "I'm Better," showcase different aspects of your artistry. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind these songs and what they mean to you personally?
Maria Raquel: "Bull's-Eye" is a deeply personal song for me. It's about the struggle of dealing with obsessive thoughts and feelings towards someone who may not feel the same way. It's like being constantly hit hard by a bull's-eye, unable to break free from this cycle of emotions. I think a lot of people can relate to this feeling of being stuck in a mental battle, and I wanted to capture that in the song.
"I'm Better," on the other hand, is all about empowerment and confidence. It's about knowing your worth and not being afraid to show it. I think as women, we're often told to shrink ourselves and not take up too much space. But "I'm Better" is a reminder that it's okay to be bold and assertive and to demand the respect you deserve.
Maria Raquel's journey is a testament to the power of music to transcend generations and touch hearts. With her soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics, she continues to captivate audiences and inspire listeners around the world. As she continues to evolve as an artist, one thing is clear: Maria Raquel is a force to be reckoned with in the world of pop music.
